Ezra 6:1-22

(Read vs. 1-12 for context)

Encouraged to Finish

INTRODUCTION:  You remember from two weeks ago that the work of the temple in Jerusalem had been resumed.  It was about 15 years between the time that the work stopped and the time that it resumed.  You remember the prophets of God Haggai and Zechariah are on the scene encouraging the people to start the work back and helping them in that work.  Now it is time to finish the work that started 15 years ago.  God wants His house finished.  He is using these people to do the work.  You know sometimes we need to be encouraged in the work of God.  Sometimes we are excited about God’s work when we begin something.  But then as it goes along, different things take away our zeal and we need to be encouraged to continue and finish strong.  Tonight, we are going to discuss three assurances that should keep you encouraged to finish the work of God.

  1. GOD WILL TURN THE HEARTS OF KINGS TO ACCOMPLISH HIS WILL (VS. 1-12)
  2. GOD WILL STRENGTHEN HIS PEOPLE AS THEY WORK (VS. 13-18)
  3. GOD WILL BRING A JOYFUL RESULT TO THE WORK OF HIS PEOPLE (VS. 19-22)

CONCLUSION:  Paul wrote at the end of his life in 2 Timothy 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:” God’s will is for you  to stay the course and finish the work that he has started in your life.  I love how this chapter ends in v. 22 “for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.”  As you go about to finish the work of God know that God can even turn the hearts of kings, there is nothing that is impossible with Him.  Receive strength from God’s word and God’s men as you finish the work.  And look forward to the joyful result that will come when the work is done.
