Dead-No Hope—Alive-Everlasting Life

Mark 16:1-14

INTRODUCTION:  There was group of women that came to the tomb of Jesus Christ early in the morning immediately after the Sabbath day.  They could do no work on the Sabbath so they waited until the Sabbath was over and came to anoint the body of Jesus.  The three women that are mentioned here are Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome.  Mary Magdalene was a woman who Jesus had cast 7 spirits out of and afterward she became a follower.  Jesus had changed her life with one spoken word.  She had been with Jesus during his life, she watched him die in Mark 15:40, she watched him being buried in Mark 15:47.  If anybody knew that Jesus Christ was dead it was Mary Magdalene.  She had witness the entire horrific scene.  Mary the mother of James we find out in a different account is the wife of Clopas.  Tradition says that Clopas was the brother of Joseph, Jesus’ earthly father.  This would make this Mary the aunt of Jesus Christ by marriage.  She had been a follower of Jesus as well.  No doubt she came to know Jesus early on in his life.  She also had witnessed the death and burial of Jesus Christ, there was no doubt in her mind that Jesus had died.  Salome was the mother of James and John.  These were two of Jesus’ closest disciples.  This woman had no doubt witnessed all of Jesus’ life.  You’ll remember when she asked if her two sons could sit on Jesus’ right hand and left hand in his Kingdom.  She was putting her future and the future of her entire family into the hands of Jesus.  These women were very likely present when Jesus said in Matt. 20:18,19 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, 19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.  In the Mark account we find him saying that openly.  They also heard Jesus say, God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life.  They knew who Jesus claimed to be.  They knew the promises that he had made.  These women especially Mary Magdalene show us the truth about the resurrection of Jesus Christ by their experience.  That truth is that if Jesus is dead there is no hope but if Jesus is alive there is every hope.

  2. These women expected to see a dead Jesus
  3. They came with spices to anoint his body
  4. These spices were to honor their fallen loved one
  5. These spices were to help with the smell of his decaying body
  6. Normally it would have been done before Jesus burial but the Sabbath had prevented it so they were just now coming to anoint his body with spices
  7. They were going to anoint the dead body of Jesus
  8. They wandered about the large stone
  9. Their discussion on the way to the tomb is about that big rock
  10. They had rolled a large stone over the mouth of the tomb
  11. The women said, I wander who will roll away that big stone
  12. They were expecting Jesus to still be in the tomb
  13. Even after they have seen the angels, in John 20 we find Mary Magdalene crying
  14. She thought someone had taken the body and hid it from her
  15. She asked a man who she thought was the gardener where he had put the body of Jesus
  16. She could not believe he was alive, because she was expecting him to be dead
  17. They had no hope as long as Jesus was dead
  18. This man had said I am the way the truth and the life and no man cometh unto the father but by me
  19. So they had put all of their faith and trust in this man
  20. He is suppose to be the only way to God
  21. Now he is dead, there is no way to God
  22. They were desperate to cling to something-so they went to anoint his body, but then what
  23. They were without direction as far as God was concerned, hopeless
  24. This man had said if they wanted to be his disciples they had to leave all and follow him
  25. They had left everything to follow him
  26. Now he is dead
  27. The eternal life that he promised died with him
  28. Now they had to start their lives over without a savior
  29. This man had said he would never leave them or forsake them
  30. Now he has left them and forsaken them if he is dead permanently
  31. They have been following him around for three years and now he is dead
  32. You don’t have any hope either if Jesus is dead
  33. He is the only way to heaven
  34. If he is dead there is either no way or he was a liar all along
  35. If he is dead he has forsaken you
  36. If he is dead then you have no one to be your savior
  37. There are many of us who have invested our lives in the service of Jesus
  38. If he is dead then it is all useless
  39. The Bible says that Christ is on the right hand of the father, that he is our advocate or defense attorney with the father, that he is interceding or going between us and the father.
  40. If he is dead we don’t have mediator
  41. If he is dead our sins cannot be forgiven
  42. If he is dead we will all face the judgment of hell fire
  43. If he is dead we are all without hope
  45. They get to the tomb and find it empty with the stone rolled away
  46. It didn’t matter anymore about the stone or the spices
  47. The stone was already rolled away and there was no body to anoint
  48. There is an angel sitting inside the tomb
  49. He says don’t be afraid and he makes the situation real clear
  50. You seek Jesus who was crucified
  51. He is risen-he is not here-look, here is where they laid him-empty
  52. He told them to go to Jerusalem and they would see Jesus there
  53. They ran away, still scared and amazed, they didn’t say anything to anybody at first
  54. 9 tells us the order in which Jesus appeared to people after his resurrection
  55. First to Mary Magdalene
  56. We find this account in John 20
  57. After she had told Peter and the disciples that the body was gone
  58. They went to see the empty tomb again
  59. The disciples went home, but Mary Magdalene stayed behind
  60. To make a long story short, she sees Jesus and talks to him
  61. Then to the two men on the way to Emmaus
  62. We find this story in Luke 24
  63. They were walking on the road to Emmaus
  64. Jesus appears to them and they don’t know him
  65. He teaches them about himself and then reveals his identity to them
  66. They ran all the way back to Jerusalem to tell the disciples
  67. Then he appeared to the eleven as they were eating
  68. We find this account back in John 20
  69. Jesus appears in a locked room
  70. He shows them his scars
  71. He asks them for food to eat
  72. He ate the food proving that he was risen in a flesh and blood body
  73. He scolds the disciples for not believing what he said all along
  74. Over the next 40 days Jesus appears to over 500 people
  75. Jesus was definitely alive
  76. There was no doubt about it
  77. There was no disputing it-oh they tried to make up stories about someone carrying the body away-but he kept popping up everywhere
  78. He was alive
  79. Now the disciples including these women have hope
  80. Jesus said I will rise-he did
  81. Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life-the way to the father is back
  82. Jesus said I will never forsake you-here he is to take care of them
  83. Jesus said follow me and you will have eternal life-now they could have eternal life
  84. They had all the hope in the world because their savior was risen
  85. Because Jesus is still alive you have hope in Him
  86. He said he would rise from the grave and then he did
  87. Jesus was crucified on a cross-he was dead-now he is alive
  88. Because He kept that promise-which was extraordinary-you can be sure that everything else he said is true
  89. This is what Jesus says about your hope in him
  90. He says in his word that we are all sinners
  91. He says in his word that we all deserve death and hell for eternity
  92. I John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
  93. Propitiation means that he is the substitute for the sins of the whole world-he died so that we can escape our punishment
  94. But he did not stay dead-He rose again after the third day-just like he said he would to be a mediator between God and man so that we might have eternal life
  95. Romans 10:9,10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation
  96. II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
  97. If you will believe in your heart that Jesus died for your sins on the cross and rose again, if you will repent, or turn away from your sins to God, you will be saved, you will have eternal life.
  98. After that you will sin-but your hope rests in the risen Jesus Christ
  99. He sits on the right hand of the father-As God the father justly gets ready to punish, Jesus Christ says that won’t be necessary, he or she has accepted my sacrifice, the price has been paid

CONCLUSION:  If Jesus is dead, I’m sorry ya’ll but we better just shut the lights off and go home.  There is no hope for us and we will die condemned sinners.  We will go to hell and suffer for all eternity in the lake of fire.  I’m here to tell you this morning, with all the other people that saw him and have experience him in their lives.  Jesus is alive!!!  There is hope!!!  He only asks that you believe and repent.  Make today the day of your salvation.
