Ezra 2:68-70

God Provides Through His People

INTRODUCTION:  At the start of chapter 2 there is a detailed list of the people that came back in this first wave of people that came back to Israel after the captivity was over.  It names the families and how many of each family.  At the end of that list we find out that 49,897 people came back. All of these people were led by Zarubabel the great grandson of Jahoachin. That count took up 67 verses of this chapter and here at the end of that count we are told something interesting.  The chief of the fathers, when they came to the site where the temple was going to be built gave an offering so that the temple could be built properly.  We see in their giving a great example of using what you have to further the work of God.  Every one of us should follow their example of giving.

  1. YOU SHOULD GIVE FREELY (V. 68)
  2. YOU SHOULD GIVE ALL THAT YOU CAN (V. 69)
  3. YOU SHOULD GIVE GENEROUSLY WITH CARE (V. 69)

(over $100,000 of our money-in that time period, a crazy amount)

CONCLUSION:  From the beginning of the Bible to the end we find God using His people to provide for His work.  We saw last week that God raises up the spirit of people to provide for His work.  As long as everyone gives as God presses upon them to give then God’s work will be provided for.  God’s will is for you to give without being pushed to do so.  God wants you to give all that you can to abundantly and generously provide for His work.  I hope and pray that you and all the members of our church will give as God sees fit.
