II Kings 24:18-25:21

(Read 24:18-20 for context)

Trust in the Wrong Places

INTRODUCTION:  The people of Judah were oblivious to the judgment of God.  Jeremiah was the main prophet of the time.  There is a lot in his prophecies in the book of Jeremiah about what was going to happen in the judgment of Judah.  His message in Jeremiah chapter 7 was that only repentance and a turning to God would save the people from judgment.  These people had some of the same ideas that people of our day have about avoiding judgment.  But the thing they refused to do was repent.  Now it was too late and the judgment of God was upon them.  Our nation is in this place right now.  We think everything is fine, but the judgment of God will not hold out forever.  The lost world that you will witness too is in this condition.  They are trusting in a lot of things to save them from the judgment.  The only true thing that will save them is if they turn from their lives of sin to follow God through Jesus Christ.  Here in this passage we find three places where you will not find salvation.

  1. STRONG GOVERNMENTS AND ARMIES WILL NOT SAVE YOU (VS. 18-12; 19-21)
  2. RELIGIOUS PLACES AND RITUALS WILL NOT SAVE YOU (VS. 13-17)

(note:  Jeremiah spoke against false prophets who said the place of the temple could not be destroyed

      3.  RELIGIOUS LEADERS WILL NOT SAVE YOU (V. 18)

CONCLUSION:  The end of v. 21 says, “So Judah was carried away out of their land.”  All of the things that they were counting on were broken down and judgment came.  None of those things helped them.  The people of our nation that do not know God through Jesus believe that electing a strong president and congress will be their salvation and security.  Some of them believe that going to church and doing religious rituals will save them.  Some of them are counting on corrupt religious leaders to give them prosperity and happiness.  The only thing that will save our nation and the lost individuals in our nation from judgment is for people to turn from their sin to follow Jesus Christ, by believing that Jesus died for personal sins and rose again.  When the people of our nation begin to come to Jesus in that way then our nation will be blessed by God and judgment will be avoided.  There is no other way to escape.  So you and I have to be the Jeremiah’s of our time and beg the people to repent and be saved through Jesus.
