Revelation 1:4-8

All about Jesus

INTRODUCTION:  John now introduces himself as the writer and really gives an overview of the entire book of Revelation. We find out in vs. 4-8 what this book is all about.  As I said last week, the truth is, that this book is all about Jesus.  In this introduction as in the rest of the book Jesus is the focus.  There are three truths that you need to recognize about Jesus if you are going to understand this book properly.  If you are going to apply this book to your life, you need to recognize these truths about Jesus.  If you are going to live your life for God and do the work that this book calls upon you to do, then you need to recognize these truths about the subject of this book, Jesus Christ.

  2. As John begins here in v. 4 he points to the three persons of the Godhead
  3. Father, Son and Holy Spirit
  4. He points to the Father as the eternal one that is and was in the past and will come in the future
  5. This language actually reads, the coming one
  6. Jesus said, I and the Father are one.
  7. You see Jesus and the Father are one, if Jesus comes the Father comes
  8. He wraps up the same idea of Jesus in v. 8
  9. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
  10. Jesus is talking, it is in red letters if you have that kind of Bible
  11. Jesus says I am God, I am everlasting, I am the coming one, I am the Almighty
  12. He points to the Holy Spirit as the seven Spirits of God
  13. First of all the number 7 in the scriptures is the complete and full number, the number of God
  14. Here we are talking about the fullness of the Spirit, in all the work that He does
  15. It has been speculated that this refers to the seven workings of the spirit
  16. We read about the works of the Holy Spirit in the life of Jesus at His coming in Isaiah 11:2 And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and might, The spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the Lord:
  17. So as John talks here about the Father and the Spirit- he ties them to the coming of Jesus, because Jesus is what this prophecy is all about.
  18. Jesus is God, He is one with the Father and the Spirit
  19. Then He says that Jesus is the faithful witness
  20. Jesus is God’s communication with man
  21. Jesus shows the love of God to man in the salvation that God offers through Him
  22. Jesus revealed God to the world
  23. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life-the only true way to God and He said as much in His true testimony to the apostles
  24. He is the true witness of God to mankind
  25. Then Jesus is the first begotten of the dead
  26.  I Corinthians 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
  27. Here the idea is the same
  28. The first fruits were the proof that the harvest would be blessed
  29. Jesus rose from the dead first to eternal life, and it is the promise from God that all of those that believe in Him and confess Him as Lord will be resurrected to eternal life as well.
  30. Jesus is our promise of resurrection and eternal life
  31. Jesus is the Prince of the kings of the earth
  32. When Jesus comes again, He will come as king
  33. In that same passage in I Corinthians 15:24-25 it reads Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
  34. You see there will be no king or ruler that can resist Jesus
  35. He will rule and reign over all the earth
  36. He should rule and reign over your life right now
  37. He will have all authority and you should give Him all authority now
  38. To wrap up, Jesus is the everlasting God who came to earth to communicate God’s salvation plan with man, he is the promise of resurrection and eternal life to His people, He will rule and reign over the earth when He comes again and deserves your allegiance and service right now in your life!
  40. First of all here in the second part of v. 5 we find that Jesus loved us
  41. Now the past tense on the word love does not mean that Jesus does not love us anymore
  42. It is simply pointing to a specific time and a specific act
  43. The word loved here is agape, it is a commitment love, a sacrificial love, a love that was not based on what people were doing for Him
  44. While we were yet sinners Jesus committed this act of love
  45. That act of love that is being pointed to is in the next phrase
  46. washed us from our sins in His own blood
  47. You see the only way that we can have eternal life and spend eternity with God is if we don’t have any sin
  48. And the only way that our sins could be washed away is if somebody paid the price for those sins
  49. The price for sin is death and Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross to pay that price for your sins
  50. It was the blood of Jesus Christ that washed away your sins, so that you could have eternal life with God and not eternal death in hell
  51. As He did that He gave us two positions in the eyes of God
  52. He made us kings unto God
  53. Spiritual kings over God’s business on earth
  54. We are to execute the will of God with the authority of God
  55. This is not a kingship where we are allowed to exercise our own authority over people
  56. This is the right and authority to carry out the will of God
  57. We rule for God, and we will rule with Jesus Christ when He comes again
  58. He also made us priests unto God
  59. A priest has access to the presence of God
  60. We can come before God and pray to God
  61. Romans 12:1 calls upon us as priests to present our bodies as a living sacrifice to God
  62. All our lives should be for God and for His use-then and only then have we brought the sacrifice before God that He will receive
  63. A priest also has the job of bring others before God
  64. We do that by showing them the way through Jesus Christ
  65. We share that message with them that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and rose again
  66. We tell them that if they will believe and confess Jesus as Lord they too can come into the presence of God and serve Him
  67. All of this will be so that God receives glory forever and ever-the Greek words here literally mean for ages and ages to come.
  68. What has Jesus done for you?
  69. He died on the cross and washed your sin in His blood simply because He loved you without condition
  70. And in the process He made you a king and priest to carry out the will of God on earth and come into the presence of God with your service.
  71. If you recognize that He did that for you, then you will believe in Him, confess Him as Lord and serve God with all of your heart-so that he receives glory for ages and ages to come
  1. We see here that Jesus comes with clouds
  2. It is the same way that He left and the angels said He would come back in like manner
  3. Here we find out that every eye will see Jesus when He comes
  4. This is not going to be a secret, there are not going to be people that don’t know what is happening
  5. Every eye will see Jesus Christ coming in the clouds
  6. All the sinners of the earth, that caused Jesus to be pierced will see Him
  7. This is the place where everybody realizes Jesus is real, I should have believed in Him
  8. The one’s that did believe have nothing to worry about
  9. But there will be a lot more from every kindred or people of the earth that did not believe
  10. They will wail, because of this realization, Jesus is real, he did die for sins, I should have believed in Him
  11. They realize that Jesus is coming to judge
  12. The word wail has the idea of beating one’s chest with grief
  13. These people are crying and suffering with grief, because they understand the judgment that they never believed in.
  14. I don’t want you to be one of those people
  15. Please believe that Jesus died on the cross for your sins
  16. Please believe that He rose from the grave
  17. Please confess Him as your master and Lord right now
  18. So that you can have eternal life and escape the judgment of hell
  19. Christians, tell them all, spare them the judgment, pull them out however you can
  20. Bring them to Jesus, because the judgment is coming.

CONCLUSION:  You need to live your life understanding and recognizing that Jesus is God, the king of kings and the Lord of lords, the eternal one, and the promise of our eternal life.  Recognize that he saved you to be his servant in a high position of honor by his blood on the cross to pay the price for your sins because He loved you and washed you.  Recognize the judgment that He will bring when He comes again, so that you can share the salvation message with others.  If you do not know Christ, recognize that you can escape that judgment by believing and turning to God through Jesus Christ.
