Jude 3-4

The Enemies of the Faith

INTRODUCTION:  Jude began to write to these people, he says, about the common salvation.  In Jude’s mind this was going to be a letter of encouragement and praise for the salvation that all the Christians held in common. It was going to be about how Jesus died on the cross for our sins and how that when we believed and confessed Jesus as Lord we received eternal life, but the Spirit of God took Jude another way.  It was needful for him to write about something else instead. God led him to write to encourage the believers to earnestly contend for the faith.  This phrase earnestly contend comes from one Greek word.  The idea is to fight with great struggle for something.  In this case, it is to fight with great struggle for the faith that was once delivered unto the saints.  Once delivered is important here. The idea is that there is no new element to the faith, it has always been the same since Jesus Christ brought the one true faith and gave it to the saints.  If it is a new teaching, look out!  That one true faith is that Jesus died on the cross for the sins of the whole world and then rose again three days later. That everyone who believes that Jesus died on the cross to pay for their sins and rose again; everyone who confesses Him as Lord of their life, can have eternal life. The faith, refers to a system of belief related to that.  Living a Christian life is included in this idea of the faith. People are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ and once they are saved they are changed to live for the glory of God.  Fight for it, struggle for it, make sure that everybody around you knows the truth.  Why should we fight so hard for that true faith, because of these enemies of the faith that he describes in v. 4.  If you are going to fight for the true faith, you need to know who your enemy is, and keep them and their teachings away from your church, from your family, from your friends and yourself.

  1. THEY ARE DECIETFUL (V. 4A)
  2.  Certain men
  3. These are not theoretically men, not just maybe these men might
  4. There were certain men that Jude knew about
  5. The words crept in unawares all come from one Greek word
  6. It literally means to sneak into a group unnoticed
  7. These certain men had put themselves into churches and groups of believers without anybody noticing that they had come in
  8. They didn’t call attention to themselves
  9. They did not want anyone to take notice of them
  10. Their purpose was to lead people away from the faith that was once delivered to the saints
  11. They wanted to change the teachings about salvation
  12. They wanted to change the teachings about how Christians should act after they were saved
  13. But they did not come in and announce their intentions
  14. They snuck in without notice and talked real quietly
  15. They were just changing people’s thinking little by little
  16. They were deceiving people without people even knowing they had been deceived
  17. These people still exist today
  18. They come into churches or a group of friends who are believers
  19. They pretend like they are one of you
  20. They pretend like they believe the same as you
  21. And little by little they want to change your thinking about things
  22. Little by little they introduce different ideas then you have been taught from the beginning
  23. And before you know it, you are not standing for the truth at all
  24. Before you know it you have compromised the truth as they have
  25. Be on watch for these kinds of people.
  26. Don’t just trust people because they seem nice and say all the right things
  27. We are not looking for people who will get in the pulpit and outreach teach falsehood, although, those exist too
  28. We are looking for people that are quietly changing our belief system from the inside.
  29. Has anybody come into your life and changed the way you thought about God and His work lately?
  30. Watch out, stand up, fight for every point of truth
  31. Share that truth with your friends, your family, the Christians around you, fight hard to keep false teaching out
  32. THEY ARE UNGODLY (V. 4B)
  33. Jude wants these Christians to understand that these people look good but they are not
  34. He wants them to know that these people are ungodly
  35. Strong’s Lexicon describes the Greek word for ungodly this way, destitute of reverential awe towards God, condemning God, impious
  36. In other words not knowing God, not recognizing the authority of God, even so far as to condemn God, accuse Him of wrong
  37. These people are directly opposed to God and the things of God
  38. They are trying to destroy God’s truth, no matter how subtly they do it
  39. They are trying to make people think less of God and more of themselves
  40. These ungodly people still exist today
  41. People that don’t care about God
  42. Want nothing to do with God
  43. Are opposed to God
  44. Godly living is not something they will care about, they will compromise and they will try to get you to compromise with them
  45. Now remember they are sneaking around
  46. They are going to pretend to be the same as you
  47. But the truth is, that God is not their priority and never will be
  48. Anybody who does not directly encourage you to follow God and do what God’s word says and teach what God’s word teaches, you should be wary of
  49. Fight against ungodly things promoted by ungodly people, no matter how softly they speak
  50. THEY TURN GOD’S GRACE INTO SIN (V. 4C)
  1. Jude continues, they turn the grace of God into lasciviousness
  2. Lasciviousness means unbridled lust, excess, wantonness, outrageousness, shamelessness, insolence. (Strong’s)
  3. This is doing what you want to do
  4. This is the idea of if it feels good do it
  5. There is not shame, you can do whatever you want to do and be bold about it
  6. Insolence is about lack of respect, in this case for God
  7. This is unbridled, unapologetic, bold, sensual sin
  8. These people that sneak in, who are ungodly, turn God’s grace into unbridled, unapologetic, bold, sensual sin
  9. This is how that looks
  10. It’s OK if I sleep with that guy that is not my husband, Jesus died for me and He loves me anyway
  11. Even if drinking is wrong, I like it and I’m going to do it anyway, and it’s OK because Jesus loves me and he died for me
  12. I am a homosexual and its OK because God loves me however I am and died for me
  13. I’m going to live my life however I want, because Jesus died for me
  14. Paul talked about this, What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.(Romans 6:1-4)
  15. We are immersed in Jesus, we died to sin, and we should act like it, do not use grace as an excuse to sin, Paul says
  16. There are many, many people in our day and time that have been deceived by this thinking
  17. Sin is wrong
  18. God is not pleased
  19. Just because He forgave it does not mean that He approves of it
  20. God wants you to live a pure and holy life that brings glory to Him
  21. Be on watch for people that encourage sin and use the grace of God as an excuse
  22. Fight against that kind of thinking with all your might
  23. THEY DENY THE TRUTH ABOUT GOD (V. 4D)
  24. Jude asserts that these people who would come in without notice, and work against God, turning his grace into sin, would also deny God
  25. The word for deny means to reject as being true
  26. In other words these people would reject  the only God
  27. When you change anything about God, He is not the same God
  28. So if they claim that there are other gods besides Him, they deny him
  29. If they claim that He is not loving, that he does not keep his promises, that he is not gracious or he is not merciful, that he is in any way different from what the Bible claims Him to be they deny Him
  30. Jude says they will not only deny the one true God, they will also deny Jesus Christ
  31. Jesus claimed to be God the Son
  32. Jesus claimed to be the Messiah, sent from God the Father
  33. Jesus claimed to be the savior of the world-and sacrificed Himself for that purpose
  34. He claimed to be the way, the truth and the life
  35. Anyone who claims different about Jesus Christ denies Him
  36. These people will come in pretending to be the same, but little by little will try to convince that God is not who the Bible says that He is, and that Jesus Christ is not what He claimed to be
  37. Anyone who even hints that God is not the God of the Bible and that Jesus Christ was not His Son come in the flesh to save mankind you should fight against
  38. You should reject their teachings
  39. You should keep them away from the people that you have influence over
  40. You should proclaim loudly the truth about the one true God and His Son Jesus Christ.

CONCLUSION: People are out there and maybe in here, that want to destroy the truth of God’s word.  There are people who will fool you into believing that their words come from God.  There are people who are opposed to God and everything about Him.  There are people that will encourage Christians to sin, using the grace of God as the excuse.  There are people that will deny the truth about God and His Son Jesus Christ.  Fight against those people.  Spread the truth with great struggle. Make sure with all your might that your circle of influence knows and is standing for the true faith that was delivered to the saints which is now found in God’s word.  Die standing for that faith if need be. Fight for the faith once delivered to the saints!
