The Word Proclaimed
INTRODUCTION: In chapter 7 Nehemiah notes that the walls were finished and the gates and doors were put up, but that the houses inside were not finished and there were not very many people. He names the people that came back from the captivity by their families and numbers them all. 49, 942 had come back. He also describes some of the offerings that were given for the work that needed to be done. The entire 50,000 people were not in the city of Jerusalem. It says at the end of chapter 7 that they dwelled in their inherited cities. But at the start of chapter 8 we see all the people gathered at Jerusalem. The reason they had come was to hear from God. Their treatment of the word of God in this chapter is absolutely inspiring. You should treat the word of God and the preaching of it the way that these people did.
- DESIRE TO HEAR THE WORD (VS. 1-3)
- RESPECT THE WORD (VS. 4-6)
- DESIRE TO UNDERSTAND THE WORD (VS. 7-8)
- LET THE WORD CONVICT YOU (V. 9)
- REJOICE THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORD (VS. 10-12)
- GLADLY OBEY THE WORD (VS. 13-18)
CONCLUSION: When was the last time that you saw a service like that? Do you desire to hear the word like that? How much do respect the word of God? Do you desire to understand everything that God has said? When was the last time that you let God’s word convict you to tears and repentance? Do you get excited when God gives you understanding of His word? All of that should cause you to want to obey the word of God and do what it says!
